Sunday Sept. 25th, 0-1 49ers @ 0-2 Colts

0-1 San Francisco rolls into Memorial Stadium in Baltimore to see if they can pick up their first win against the 0-2 Colts here in week 3. Baltimore dominated the first quarter with 6 first downs to San Fran’s 0 and the Colts gained 122 total yards and the 49ers managed to go backwards -11 total yards. Baltimore stalled out on both of their drives that took them into scoring range settling for field goals, Colts 6, 49ers 0 at the end of one.

Johnny Unitas opened the second quarter with a 63 yard rainbow for six points to Raymond Berry; Baltimore increases their lead to 13 to 0. San Fran could not get on track most of the quarter until the last 5 minutes. John Brodie slung a beauty to WR Bernie Casey for 69 yards and suddenly the 49ers were on the scoreboard. Baltimore started to make some untimely mistakes opening door for the Niners. Then with less than two minutes in half, Unitas was picked off by San Francisco DE Clark Miller off a batted pass and he raced 40 yards for the pick six. At the half San Francisco has taken the lead 14 to 13, Baltimore fans are completely stunned.

Both teams put together one long drive in the 3rd period only to end in missed field goals so the score remains the same, 49ers 14 Colts 13 as we head in to the final period of play.

The 4th quarter was another defensive battle but the 49ers did pickup three more points giving them a 4 point lead as the game clock was winding down. Unitas drove the length of the field on quick passes but the Colts stalled out around 45 of San Fran. Baltimore decided to go for it on 4th down with less than 45 seconds to play. Unitas dropped back and fired a pass over the head of Berry and that sealed the game for the 49ers. San Francisco gets win number one on the road in Baltimore. The Colts drop to a dismal 0-3 start.
