Attendance: 42,080
Weather: 32* | 13mph winds | Chill factor -22*

Hello everyone, this is Curt Gowdy along with Paul Christman bringing you today’s AFL Championship Game here at a cold and windy New York Shea Stadium. Game time temperature is hovering at 32 degrees with the wind blowing steadily out of the east at 13mph. The -22 wind chill factor and the gusty conditions may force both teams to go to their ground games early today as catching the football could prove most difficult this afternoon. Kansas City finished number one on offense and defense for the 1966 season and are favored by 3 points this afternoon. The Jets second year quarterback, Joe Namath received top honors as the top passer for 1966 throwing for 2,525 yards and 17 touchdowns. New York has won the coin toss and has elected to receive the football. Looks like both teams are taking the field lining up for the kickoff. The visiting Kansas City Chiefs will be in white jerseys with red numbers and pants with their distinctive red helmets. New York will of course be wearing their green jerseys with white pants and white helmet. The crowd is on their feet as both teams are ready to go and the referee is gives the signal to start the ball game.

1st QUARTER ACTION:
Kansas City’s Mike Mercer kickoff sails high into air down to the 17 of NY where it’s taken by Emerson Boozer. Straight ahead return to the Jets 37, nice return by Boozer of 20 yards.

NY – 1st and 10 from the NY 37
New York breaks the huddle and comes to the line in the I-Formation, the snap is clean and Namath turns to hand the ball off to Boozer but he has slipped on the icy field. Namath gets the ball to him but Boozer is buried for a -7 yard loss. Hold on we have a flag on the field and both teams are looking confused as to who it’s on. The Referee is signaling illegal block on New York, Kansas City will decline the penalty.

NY – 2nd and 17 from the NY 30
looking to his right Namath takes the snap and back-pedals, good pocket all around him. Sideline throw out to George Sauer, wind blew that one over his head and it’s incomplete.

NY – 3rd and 17 from the NY 30
New York better be careful here as I’m sure the Chiefs will be coming after him on this third and long situation. Jets throw a safe pass out of the backfield to Matt Snell for a minimal gain of 5 yards and the Jets are sending out the punter.

NY – 4th and 17 from the NY 30
Curley Johnson’s punt travels to the KC 10 where it’s taken by Mike Garrett. Jets with great punt coverage forcing Garrett to call for the fair catch at the 10 yard line and that’s where the Chiefs will start their first offensive drive.

KC – 1st and 10 from the KC 10
Dawson has his team at the line in split backs, quick dive to the right and Garrett picks up 9 yards on the quick hitter.

KC – 2nd and 1 from the KC 19
Kansas City is driving into the wind here in the first quarter. Garrett again straight ahead for just 2 yards and that will move the chains for KC.

KC – 1st and 10 from the KC 21
Dawson with a hard count, play action pass to Otis Taylor and Dawson will not get it off as Verlon Biggs hauls him down in the pocket for a -7 yard loss.

KC – 2nd and 17 from the KC 14
The Chiefs set up in the I and Len Dawson takes the snap, gives it to Curtis McClinton on a quick-hitter through the line, spins to the outside and bounces of a tackler and is finally collared from behind, that’s a gain of 19 yards!

KC – 1st and 10 from the KC 33
Kansas City with double tight ends, counter play to the left and Mike Garrett gains 8 yards before getting pushed out of bounds. KC caught the Jets in a blitz.

KC – 2nd and 2 from the KC 41
Fake dive to Garrett up the middle and Dawson pitches the ball out to McClinton, nothing there as the Jets were not fooled, no gain on the play.

KC – 3rd and 2 from the KC 41
Dawson has Otis Taylor out to his right and is looking his way. Quick count, straight ahead power dive to Mike Garrett and he slips through the line for a gain of 4 yards and another KC first down.  New York has to shore up their run defense and make a stop as the Chiefs are ripping them for 4 to 6 yards on every play.

KC – 1st and 10 from the KC 45
Split backs for KC, off tackle run by Garrett, stutter steps and slips past Paul Crane for 9 yards and that sets up a short 2nd and 1 for Dawson.

KC – 2nd and 1 from the KC 46
Play action pass from Dawson, rolls right, the pass is tipped high into the air, picked off by defensive end Gerry Philbin! Clear field in front of him and he rambles all the way, a 59 pick six for New York! There are three flags on the field and officials are signaling to bring the ball back as it looks to be on NY. Weeb Ewbank is pretty upset as the referee is explaining to him the call. Here’s the call, New York, defensive holding, five yards and an automatic first down for Kansas City. That call took the air out of the stadium, what a game changer.

KC – 1st and 10 from the NY 41
Short gain on first down, just 2 yards by McClinton.

KC – 2nd and 8 from the NY 39
Kansas City is going back to the ground game as their only two pass attempts were disasters. Dawson pitches the ball out to speedy Mike Garrett; he’s around the corner and down the right sideline for a 28 yard scamper to the New York 11.

KC – 1st and 10 from the NY 11
We are midway through quarter one with 8:19 left of the scoreboard clock and the Chiefs are threatening  to score. Kansas City in I formation with 81 yards on the ground so far. Len Dawson takes the snap and gives it to Curtis McClinton, plows through the line and now he’s tripped up and brought down after a gain of 6 yards.

KC – 2nd and 4 from the NY 5
New York has their run defense in trying to slow down the KC’s running game. Dawson has the Chiefs at line, calls out the signals, turns left and hands off to Curtis McClinton on trap play, Big Hole as McClinton walks in for the touchdown. The extra point is good so with 7:42 left in the first the Chiefs are on the scoreboard. Kansas City made a real statement with their opening drive marching 90 yards in 12 plays to score the games first points.

KC’s kickoff goes two yard deep into the endzone and Earl Christy ran it out to the NY 23.

NY – 1st and 10 from the NY 23
The Jets break the huddle and come to the line in a a split back set. Joe Namath takes the snap and gives it to Emerson Boozer following his right guard and now he’s yanked to the turf after a gain of 2 yards. We have kind of fight going on down there and flags are out, Unnecessary roughness signaled against the Chiefs after the play. Tack on fifteen more yards and the Jets have their first first down of the ball game.

NY – 1st and 10 from the NY 40
New York is trying to get the running game on track, Boozer gets the ball again and gains just 2 yards on the play as the Chiefs defense is giving no ground.

NY – 2nd and 8 from the NY 42
Kansas City is Blitzing from the corner, Namath has throw early to avoid the sack and the pass hits the frozen turf 2 yards in front of Don Maynard, incomplete.

NY – 3rd and 8 from the NY 42
Namath with a 7 step drop, has a little time and looks over the secondary. Joe fires a bullet to George Sauer 12 yards down field, hit him right on the numbers and the pass slipped in and out of his frozen hands, incomplete.

NY – 4th and 8 from the NY 42
Curley Johnson got off another great punt aided by the wind. This one traveled 55 yards to the KC 3 yard line. Punt returner Mike Garrett just let the ball bounce into the endzone for the touchback.

KC – 1st and 10 from the KC 20
With 5:54 remaining in the first period Len Dawson and the Chiefs are coming out on the field. Quick count and snap, off tackle play and its Garrett slashing through the line and blows past the linebackers for a 25 yard gain! Mike Garrett has 84 yards rushing on 7 carries and we are only in the first quarter of play.

KC – 1st and 10 from the KC 44
Dawson with a new set of downs, takes a 5 step drop trying to get a pass off to Otis Taylor but the Jets flushed him out of the pocket, made it back to the line of scrimmage. Kansas City has tried three times to pass but Dawson has not been able to even get a pass off. Now if New York can just stop the running game of KC.

KC – 2nd and 10 from the KC 44
Kansas City breaks the huddle and trots to the line, set and Dawson is barking out the signal. Counter play to Garrett going left, another big hole and he is GONE! Garrett rips off a 56 yard touchdown run showing off his speed. With 4:30 to go in quarter one the Chiefs are on top of the Jets 14 to 0 and in total control of the ball game.

Mike Mercer’s kickoff travels to the 10 yard line of NY where its taken by Emerson Boozer. Right return on as he heads down the sideline, cuts it back to the middle of the field for a 50 yard return for the JETS!!! Namath needs to pickup some points off this great field position before this game gets totally away from the Jets.

NY – 1st and 10 from the KC 40
Matt Snell gets the call, right up the gut for a 3 yard gain and the BALLS OUT, FUMBLE!!! Big pile down there as the referee’s sort this out we will have to wait to see who has the football. The officials are saying that New York recovered the ball, looks like it was right guard Dave Herman that got control of the ball. Whew that was close and the Jets just continue to misfire.

NY – 2nd and 10 from the KC 37
Namath throws a quick slant to Maynard and once again the pass if off target and sails way to far out in front of him, incomplete.

NY – 3rd and 10 from the KC 37
Namath was looking for Maynard again and the pass was batted away falling to the frozen turf and spinning out of bounds incomplete.

NY – 4th and 10 from the KC 37
Here comes the field goal unit to attempt a long 44 yarder with a little over two minutes remaining in the first quarter. Jim Turner’s kick is high and long but the wind pushed it wide right, no good. New York comes up empty on that great field position.

KC – 1st and 10 from the KC 20
Len Dawson takes the snap and gives it to Curtis McClinton, juke move to get through the line and he dances around a tackle, straight-arm and now he’s pounced on and forced to the turf, gain of 24 yards.

KC – 1st and 10 from the KC 44
Mike Garrett runs a trap to the right, slammed hard at the line and the balls out, FUMBLE. Looks like the Chiefs recovered the ball, its left tackle Jim Tyrer hauling in the loose football for KC.

KC – 2nd and 10 from the KC 44
Dawson with a three step drop and fires a quick pass to Mike Garrett, complete cuts left for a 10 yard gain to the New York 46.

KC – 1st and 10 from the NY 46
Curtis McClinton takes the hand off on a dive play, stiff arm on the linebacker and he’s off for another big gain, this one for 19 yards.

KC – 1st and 10 from the NY 27
Len Dawson fakes the hand-off, rolling out to his right, high toss to Chris Burford and it’s incomplete.

KC – 2nd and 10 from the NY 27
Mike Garrett going wide trying to get around the corner, cuts back inside for a 10 yard gain and that will end the first quarter of play. Quarter one has been all Kansas City as the statistics reveal, very dominate performance so far by the Chiefs. As the teams switch ends of the field we will take a short commercial break.

Looks like Joe and offense is coming back out onto the field to try and pick up the first down. After talking discussing their chances for a field goal from this distance, which Jim Turner is 3 of 9 attempts and this one would be into the wind making it even harder, they have decided to keep Jim on the bench. Quick pass to Pete Lammons and it batted away and the Jets come up empty.

KC – 1st and 10 from the KC 39
Kansas City just hands off to McClinton for a one yard game and both teams are headed into the locker room. Kansas City leads the ball game 21 – 0, but the Jets were showing some signs of life in the second quarter.
