Week 5 in the NFL opens up with a big game for the NFL Eastern Division leader. Pittsburgh at 3-0-1 will be heading to Cleveland to take on the 3-1 Browns who are chasing the Steelers; this should be a fun ball game. Quarter one ended with neither team being able to score, the only attempt at points was a Lou Groza field goal the he shanked.
Cleveland jumps out in front early in the 2nd period on a 46 yard scamper by fullback Ernie Green. Pittsburgh just cannot move the football on the Browns this afternoon. Steelers have just 34 total yards in the ball game, compared to the Browns 177 yards and 2 touchdowns, Pittsburgh is looking pretty awful. With just a little over one minute to play in the first half, this one has been all Cleveland so far. As we head into halftime the Cleveland Browns are up 14 to 0 and looking strong.
Lou Groza kicked off to Gary Ballman of Pittsburgh, taken at the one yard line and returned 64 yards to the Browns 35! Nice start for the Steelers. Cleveland came after the Steelers with a Blitz and Dick Hoak slipped through for a 15 yard run on second down. The 4th quarter will begin with the Browns at their 46 with a 1st and 10 and they could not move the chains so here another punt by the Browns. Pittsburgh’s running back Dick Hoak snapped of a nice 25 yard run giving the Steelers a 1st and 10 at the 23 of Cleveland. Ron Smith will be replacing George Izo at QB here in the final period of play. Frank Ryan … lofts one for Ernie Green… CAUGHT … and smashed to the turf at the Cleveland 49 yard line … a gain of 16 yards … its 1st and 10 from the Cleveland 49. Frank Ryan … from the pocket throws to Paul Warfield … juggled but held … and he’s immediately hit and downed at the Pittsburgh 30 yard line … a gain of 21 yards … a new set of downs … as its 1st and 10 from the Pittsburgh 30. Looks like the Browns have finally woken up! Frank Ryan … takes the snap and drops back … … throws to Ernie Green … and it’s batted away … incomplete … … it’s now 2nd and 10 from the Pittsburgh 30. Cannonball Butler pops the kickoff return for 40 yards, hold on we have flags out on the field, unsportsmanlike conduct on Cleveland, that’s another 15 yards added to the end of the return. Pittsburgh gets another break and with 4:19 left they need to score quickly. After two failed plays the Steelers are looking at a 3rd and 17. Cleveland’s defense does it again: Ron Smith … getting flushed out of the pocket … and he’s sacked by Jim Kanicki … and that’s a loss of 5 yards … the Steelers now face a 4th and 22 from the Pittsburgh 47. Frank Ryan has just 3:04 to burn off the clock an get the much needed win at home. 3rd and 4 and Ernie Green carries the pigskin … passed the line of scrimmage … pivots inside … and now he’s tackled after a decent gain of 14 yards … its 1st and 10 from the Cleveland 38 and we are at the 2 minute warning. It’s Green again for another 19 yards. Green has been unstoppable today racking up 171 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown. Pitt takes a timeout, their second and with 1:04 left in the ball game Cleveland has a 2nd and 4 forth coming. The Steelers hold Kelly to no gain and take their final timeout. Ernie Green bounces to the outside … reverses direction … leaps over a tackle and is spilled to the turf … … that’s a pickup of 3 yards … the Browns now face a 4th and 1 from the Pittsburgh 34 with just nine seconds left, look like they run just one more play. Cleveland knocks off the Steelers 20 to 13 and will move into first place.
