Sunday Oct 9th, 4-0 Packers @ 1-2 49ers

Great performance by Bart Star to get the Packers into field goal range in the final minutes

The 4-0 Green Bay Packers travels to San Francisco to battle the Forty Niners at Kezar Stadium. Green Bay came into this came with the exact record as my replay, 4-0 and ended up losing to the Forty Niners who where winless at 0-2-1. This should be an interesting ball game to play and the Packers need to get the win with the Minnesota Vikings in hot pursuit at 3-1.

George Mira will get the start for San Francisco as John Brodie is banged up. Mira struck first with a long touchdown pass to Dave Parks and the Niners jump out in front on the Packers. In the closing minute of quarter one, Paul Hornung ripped of an 18 yard TD run to tie the game up. Second quarter action was just a field goal by Don Chandler  from 35 yards out to give Green Bay the lead heading into halftime 10 to 7.

Tommy Davis kick a field goal from 44 yards out and the 49ers tie the ball game back up. The 3rd period would end in a tie and the 49ers would bring in John Brodie to try and get the offense jump started. Green Bay’s Jim Taylor would plow into the endzone from 3 yard out to give the Packers the lead early in the 4th quarter, but Don Chandler missed the extra point, an in a game this tight, this was a huge misfortune. John Brodie on his very first pass of the game went deep and low and behold he connected with Dave Parks for a 60 yard TD Bomb, the extra point was good, all of the sudden the Packers were behind by one missed extra point. The Packers got the ball back with less than four minutes to play and Green Bay’s 4-0 start rested on the arm of Bart Star.

Bart Star got the Packers rolling on short and medium passes mixed with some great runs by Elijah Pitts and Paul Hornung. With a little over a minute to go Star had the Packers sitting on the 15 yard line of San Fran. Green Bay failed to convert on 3rd down so in came Don Chandler to be the games hero or goat.  Chandler split the uprights and the Packers remain undefeated escaping a loss at Kezar Stadium by two thin slices of cheese!

Only the Packers, Jets and Chiefs remain undefeated so far.

Actual Score: Green Bay 20 at San Francisco 21
APBA Replay Score: Green Bay 19 at San Francisco 17
