Sunday Oct 2nd, 1-1-1 Lions @ 3-0 Packers

Lombardi’s 3-0 Packers will host the 1-1-1 Detroit Lions this week. With Minnesota losing to the Bears this week, the Packers have a chance to move one game ahead of the Vikings in the Western Division. During the actual season Green Bay defeated the Lions and remained undefeated as they have the same record as my replay Packers, we will see if they can write the same history this afternoon. Packers won the coin toss and will receive the kickoff. This should be a highly entertaining ball game.

Green Bay strikes first with an 18 yard field goal by Don Chandler. Chandler missed one early in the quarter but the Pack is up 3-0 with 8:39 left in the first. Very frustrating game for the Packer fans so far in this one. Green Bay has marched up and down field with ease only to stall out inside the 20 of Detroit several times, and then add two missed field goals by Chandler, not a good game so far for the Packers in general. Packers just turned the football over with 10:23 left before halftime as Bart Star was hit and fumbled the football on a pass attempt, recovered by Dick LeBeau and returned 8 yards to the Green Bay 47.

Green Bay has racked up 193 yards of offense compared to Detroit’s 25 and they have held the football for 17:43 but only have 3 points to show for their effort. With 5:51 left in the first half, once again the packers stalled out at the 24 of Detroit so here comes Mr. Inconsistent, Don Chandler to attempt his 4th field goal try of the game, he is just 1 for 3. The call from the Booth: From the 24 … the football will be spotted at the Detroit 31 yard line and the Packers are looking at a 31 yard field goal attempt … … … and Don Chandler’s field goal from 31 yards … … IS NAILED HOME !!! … … and that will extend the Packers lead … it’s now 6-0 for Green Bay.

This ball game has taken on the same feel as the Vikings Bears game I just played. Paul Hornung is having a great game, 15 carries for 99 yards in the first half so far. Green Bay has once again miss fired on a 3rd down pass attempt leaving them a 4th and 3 situation at the 33 of Detroit, with 1:15 to go in the half it looks like Lombardi will keep his offense on the field. Star back to pass, Bart Starr … getting flushed out of the pocket … and he’s sacked by Mike Lucci … and that’s a loss of 6 yards … Green Bay turns it over on downs … and the Lions have the football at the Detroit 39 yard line. Detroit runs out the clock and off to halftime we go. The Lions feel pretty lucky to just be down by 6 points in this one.

3rd quarter started with the Packers getting an early break on a muffed punt return by Detroit, Packers have the football 1st and goal at the 9 yard line. Detroit stuffed the Packers on four attempts to crack the goal line, turnover on downs at the three of Detroit. Green Bay’s Don Chandler gets the Packers three more points: From the 32 … the football will be spotted at the Detroit 39 yard line and the Packers are looking at a 39 yard field goal attempt … … … and Don Chandler’s field goal from 39 yards … is not looking good … … NOT LOOKING GOOD … … AND IT’S GOOD !!! … … THE WIND GOT A HOLD OF IT … AND PUSHED IT HOME !!! … and that will extend the Packers lead … it’s now 9-0 for Green Bay.

The final quarter will begin with the Lions on their own 44, 3rd and 4. Packers Willie Wood picked off Milt Plum and ran it back 25 yards to the Detroit 36, we are midway through the 4th. Bart Star missed a pass but Detroit was called for roughing the passer, that’s 15 yards and an automatic first down at the Lions 21. Another stall out and here comes Chandler once again: From the 21 … the football will be spotted at the Detroit 28 yard line and the Packers are looking at a 28 yard field goal attempt … … … and Don Chandler’s field goal from 28 yards … is not looking good … … NOT LOOKING GOOD … … AND IT’S GOOD !!! … … THE WIND GOT A HOLD OF IT … AND PUSHED IT HOME !!! … and that will extend the Packers lead … it’s now 12-0 for Green Bay.

Chandler started off as the games goat and ended up being the games hero with 4 field goals giving the Packers a 4-0 record. Lombardi’s defense completely shut down the Lions today allowing only 92 yards of total offense. What a slug fest this ball game turned out to be, was fun to play out.

Actual Score: Detroit 14 at Green Bay 23
APBA Replay Score: Detroit 0 at Green Bay 12
