Sunday Oct 2nd, 2-1 Bills @ 3-0 Chiefs

BOX SCORE

Mike Garrett had a great afternoon rushing for 118 yards and a touchdown.

43, 885 Chief fans pile into Kansas City’s Municipal Stadium where they will host the visiting 1-3 Buffalo Bills, a team that has underperformed so far this season in my replay. Buffalo is looking to get back on track this afternoon, this will not be an easy task against the Chiefs. Kansas City is undefeated so far at 3-0; this is right where they were in 1966 before losing to the Bills in the real game 29 to 14. Buffalo lost the coin toss so the Chiefs will get the ball first.

Quarter one was a show of defensive power by both clubs as neither good gain an advantage over the other in the running or pass game. Buffalo strung one long drive together which ended in a 16 yard field goal by Booth Lusteg giving the Bills an early 3-0 lead. Quarter two will start with the Chiefs at their own 22, 2 and 10.

The first drive of 2nd period by the Chiefs was all on the ground with 4 runs of 21 yards by their backs; Mike Garrett had 1 and Gene Thomas 3! Garrett gets the go ahead touchdown from one yard out, KC on top 7 to 3 with 12:04 until halftime, things are heating up now. KC moved the football once again into field goal range picking up three more points, KC 10 BUF 3. We are in the last two minutes before halftime and the Bills have the football at the Chiefs 39, 2nd down and 1, they have all three timeouts to use. After a loss of a yard on second down the Bills were called for tripping on the next play after they had made the first down, now its 3nd and 12 at midfield. Kemp missed Elbert Dubenion forcing the 4th down punt with one minute left. Kansas City is content to just run the clock out and head into halftime up 10 to 3. Buffalo needs to clean up the penalties; this has really hurt them this afternoon.

Midway through the 3rd quarter the Chiefs attempted a field goal at the 21 of Buffalo on a 4th and 4. Mike Mercer missed it but the Bills were flagged for jumping offside’s, first and ten for the Chiefs at the 16 of Buffalo, again the penalty bug is biting the Bills. Another flag and its flagrant face masking called on Buffalo, 1st and 5 for the Chiefs at the 5. KC running back Curtis McClinton hits the line and the ball is on the turf! Buffalo has recovered the football right at the line of scrimmage. Buffalo holds up on the goal line stand. With the score still 10-3 Chiefs, Buffalo has created a turnover setting themselves up 1st and goal at the three of KC. Dawson has really struggled the entire game passing, just 7 of 16 for 63 yards and now, a tipped pass was picked off by the Bills with 3:17 remaining in the 3rd. Buffalo’s first play is flagged for illegal motion, now its 1st and 13. Kansas City holds the Bills out of the end zone forcing another field goal which was good. The end of the third period and the score is: Bills 6 Chiefs 10.

Mike Garrett has run for 110 yards on 17 attempts in the ball game. Len Dawson and the Chiefs turned to their run game to get some rhythm going on offense. It paid off with a long drive capped off by Dawson on a 1 yard QB sneak. The Chiefs are up 17 to 6 with 10:30 to play. Jack Kemp has thrown back to back interceptions, both picked off by Fred Williamson of Kansas City. Despite Dawson’s poor performance today the Chiefs remain undefeated knocking off the Bills 20 to 6.
