Sunday Oct 2nd, 2-1 Browns @ 0-3 Giants

2-1 Cleveland Browns rolls into the big city of New York looking to get win number three to keep pace with Pittsburgh Steelers. The winless Giants have a tough task this afternoon against the powerful Browns as they try and get their first win on the season. Cleveland received the opening kickoff and on their 3rd play of the game, 3rd and 8, Frank Ryan threw a quick out to Gary Collins and he took it to the house for a 52 yard catch and run. New York picked up a safety after a botched punt attempt by Cleveland. The punt snap went over Gary Collins head and into the end zone and Leroy Kelly tried to run it out, no way, New York had Kelly buried before he took one step. Cleveland 7 New York 2 with 5:56 left in the first. Giant’s running back Dan Lewis had a breakaway run on the second play after the safety kickoff from Cleveland. Lewis popped it for a 73 yard touchdown gallop and the Giants have taken the lead 9 to 7.

At the 6:04 mark in the 2nd quarter Giants running back Dan Lewis breaks one loose again for a touchdown, this one from 81 yards out. Lewis is having a career day with 6 touches for 160 yards and 2 TD’s so far, WOW. Frank Ryan and the Browns marched right down the field throwing the football, and then it was Leroy Kelly blasting into the endzone for the go ahead score with 1:40 to go until halftime. The first half for Frank Ryan has been outstanding, throwing for 158 yards, one TD and completing 11 of 17 attempts. New York is content to run out the clock and head into the locker room. At the half, it’s the Cleveland 21, New York 16.

Midway through the 3rd period the Browns score another touchdown, you guessed it, Leroy Kelly again, that’s his 3rd this afternoon. Kelly broke free from 11yds out, just out ran the defense. The play was setup by Frank Ryan as he threw into double coverage to his big tight end Milt Morin for a 23 yard gain. New York could not get the touchdown from one yard out, Cleveland’s defense held strong on the goal line stand forcing a field goal as we close out quarter three.

Cleveland has the good mojo today. Frank Ryan threw down field to Milt Morin for a 12 yard gain but Milt fumbled. Gary Collins was in the area, scooped up the loose ball and darted off for a 51 yard touchdown! The Browns up on the Giants 34 to 19, the extra point was no good, botched snap again for Cleveland. The Browns win big in New York and stay in the hunt for first place in the division, final here at Yankee Stadium, Browns 34 Giants 19.
