Sunday Oct 2nd, 3-0 Jets @ 2-1 Patriots

Boston will host the New York Jets this afternoon at Fenway Park. This should be a good matchup with Boston at 2-1 and New York at 3-0. The first quarter turned into a real defensive battle with neither team’s defense giving up yards to the opposing offense. Both ball clubs controlled the football for a little over 7 minutes but the Patriots fumbled twice killing their drives. Joe Willy tossed a 6 yard touchdown pass to Matt Snell down near the goal line and that has been the only points so far in this contest. Jets Kicker Jim Turner missed a 33 yarder earlier in the quarter, shanking it wide right.

Boston tied the game up on a 9 yard run by Jim Nance on their first possession in quarter two, solid drive by the Patriots. New York answers back with a long drive capped off by Joe’s pass to Don Maynard from 20 yards out. New York is back on top 14 to 7 with 7:36 to go in the first. Namath is having a good game so far, 8 of 12 for 92 yards and 2 touchdowns. N.Y. once again drove the length of the field to get into scoring range. Namath threw a pass to Maynard in the corner of the end zone, in and out of his hands. Jim Turner did not miss this time increasing the Jets lead to 17 to 7. We are at the two minute warning. Babe Parilli attempted a pass which was tipped at the line and snatched out of the air by left defensive end Gerry Philbin, lost two yards on the return but the Jets have the football at the 13 of Boston with 1:45 to go. After running the ball down to the Boston 4, New York is faced with a big decision, 4th and one, go for it or kick the field goal, Weeb and Joe are talking it over. Here comes Joe back out onto the field, their going for it. Power dive to Boozer, gain of 2 on the play! First down at the 2 for the Jets with 30 seconds to go, with 2 timeouts remaining there is plenty of time. Boozer gets the call and he plows into the endzone for the score, hold on we have a flag on the field. The officials are discussing the call, holding defense! New York has increased their lead to 24 to 7 at the half.

Boston had only one field goal attempt in quarter three and they missed it, they just keep making mistakes down close blowing their scoring opportunities. New York did little in the 3rd period. The 4th period will begin with NY in possession of the football at their 39 yard line.

The first play of the 4th period resulted in Namath tossing a 61 TD strike to George Sauer to blow this game wide open. That’s the third TD pass for Joe today. Babe Parilli final hooked up with Art Graham for a 60 yard passing play which resulted in another fumble and turnover for the Patriots, rough afternoon for Boston. The fumble was recovered by Johnny Samples at the NY 29, little over seven minutes to go. Boston managed to pick up a touchdown but that was it. Boston falls to 2-2 and the Jets improve to 4-0.
Just too many mistakes for Boston, they played well overall but the 4 fumble just took the wind out of the sails in this one.
