The first drives by both teams ended in punts with nothing to exciting happening until about midway through quarter one. At the 9:52 mark in the first quarter Chicago’s Rudy Bukich took off on a 43 yard scramble only to fumble the football at the 37 of Baltimore. On 2nd and 10, Johnny Unitas dropped back to pass but Chicago sent the blitz and clobbered Unitas from his blindside causing a fumble, which Chicago’s defensive right tackle Dick Evey recovered on the 20 yard line of Baltimore.  George Halas calls a trap to Sayers, Gale Sayers but the Colts are keying on him: Sayers … looking for a seam … but there’s nothing there … and he’s brought down for a loss of -2 yards … it’s now 3rd and goal from the Baltimore 11. Fullback Tony Lorick pushes the pile into the endzone as the Baltimore Colts take the lead 7-3 with 8:04 left in half number one. Bears fullback Ronnie Bull gains 6 yards up the gut but we have a fight on the field and flags are flying. The play will stand for Chicago and the referees are marking off another 15 yards against the Colts for unsportsmanlike conduct. Chicago will have to settle for another field goal attempt after the failed 3rd down play: Play-action … Rudy Bukich tosses it to Gale Sayers … and he’s steamrolled at the Baltimore 30 yard line … that’s a small pickup of 5 yards … the Bears now face a 4th and 5 from the Baltimore 30. Johnny Unitas was picked off by Dick Butkus off a deflected pass near the line of scrimmage, returned five yards and the Bears have a 1st and 10 at the 42 of Baltimore. Chicago could do nothing with the great field position and will punt the ball. Baltimore strung a long drive together only to stall out at the nine yard line of Chicago, the field goal kick was good.  Baltimore 13, Chicago 3 with 4:47 to go in the third quarter. Chicago finally got within field goal range in the closing minutes of the 3rd: From the 38 … the football will be spotted at the Baltimore 45 yard line and the Bears are looking at a 45 yard field goal attempt … … … and here’s Roger LeClerc with the kick … … SHANKED … and off to the right … and it’s … … NO GOOD !! … … the Bears fail to cut into the lead as the score remains … Baltimore 13 …  and Chicago 3 …  the Colts will now scrimmage at their 20. Johnny Unitas has played the best game of the season today passing for 259 yards and touchdown, completing 19 of 25 attempts. Unitas and his arm, took the Colts the length of the field for another Baltimore touchdown, 20 to 3 Baltimore. Chicago will need to turn to its passing game to have any chance of catching the Colts. Bukich’s pass is picked off by strong safety Jerry Logan at the 42 of Baltimore, one yard return.

The Bears passing game is of no effect: Rudy Bukich checks the play-clock … now takes the snap … throws to Johnny Morris … incomplete … … batted away at the last second by Baltimore … … Chicago turns it over on downs … and the Colts have the football at the Chicago 9 yard line with just two minutes left before getting their first win this year! Tony Lorick rambles in for the final score of the game: And that does it … the final score … the Baltimore Colts 27 and the Chicago Bears 3.
